In a study published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine, mild COVID-19 resulted in arterial stiffness in young adults and increased long-term detrimental effects on cardiovascular health. Arterial stiffness is a biomarker related to artery aging and function.

It also refers to a decrease in the capacity of arteries to expand and contract in response to variations in blood pressure, which is associated with cardiovascular disease. In the study, researchers discovered that two to three months after infection, people with mild COVID had impaired arterial and central cardiovascular function.

The side effects included stiffer and more dysfunctional arteries, which can contribute to the development of cardiovascular disease. While COVID-19 has been linked to a type of acute heart failure and vascular dysfunction, the long-term effects of the condition on vascular health have yet to be investigated.

For the study, arterial stiffness was assessed in a group of healthy individuals before the pandemic. These participants were then brought back following the diagnosis of a mild COVID infection to take the same measures. The findings of the study showed that only 9% of the sample had high blood pressure, and none had excessive cholesterol.
